THE GIRLHOOD PROJECT

ZOEY ABBOTT

installation & video essay project, social practice in the arts, AAC

april 2024, cincinnati ohio

if these bracelets have connected with you..

please take it home! if you were lucky enough to stumble upon these art pieces first in washington park, you are now their new owner. please take it home if it brings you joy. this piece is designed to be taken all over the city to new homes. if this bracelet does not bring you joy, gift it to someone! it is now yours to take!

girlhood project methodology

my experience growing up as a girl often felt isolating and i’ve connected with many other peers around topics related to seclusion in aging as a result of patriarchal pressures.

through the girlhood project, i want to open up a conversation about growth as a woman and celebrate the small things that connect us with our peers.

my goal is to evoke feelings of nostalgia in viewers and help them remember the good parts of growing up through a friendship bracelet installation piece and a video essay of compiled interviews.

in my video essay, i asked my peers one question, “what was your favorite part of girlhood?”

here is the final result.

THE GIRLHOOD

PROJECT

the future of the girlhood project

these friendship bracelets acted as an icon for this entire project, showing up in every interview clip i took and existing in public spaces until they’re moved to their new home. your job as a viewer is to be that new home, no strings attached.

you can do whatever you’d like with each piece, give it to a friend, take it apart and turn it into something else, hang it up in your house, anything.

this is not required, but if you would like, please text me at (513)-393-2484 or on instagram @abbottarts_ and show me their journey. i’ll include any pictures you send on this website!
